Why we created a public speaking app
To set ideas free.
I used to struggle with articulating my ideas, to even a small audience.
English was my second language (I was brought up speaking Urdu): I shrank from the very idea of public speaking.
Then I joined Toastmasters. I learned what public speaking was all about. I saw that even I could practice and master different techniques to make it all far easier — even a pleasure.
That gave me an idea. To treat public speaking not as the innate ability of a lucky few, but instead as a skill. A skill that could be developed step by step, through a simple but subtle smartphone app.
During my second Toastmasters meeting I was startled. Applause! My words were still entangled with too with “ums” and other hesitations. My ideas and message were disorganized, maybe not even coherent. But people were clapping. They heard me getting a clear step better. I was encouraged to press on, thanks to this positive reinforcement.
I grasped that the first step to improving is being honest with yourself: accepting that you need to improve, then committing to improving. This means practice.
Toastmasters helps with this. Everyone wants to learn. To experiment. To test what works, and talk through why exactly it works. To take controlled risks under safe conditions. A safe space
